March 2010 DVD Rental Guide Update

We've completed our annual major review, going through and visiting each site to update prices, inventory sizes, special offers, etc. In the process we discovered the smallish company NumberSlate had gone out of business (as ever we keep our old reviews as they were for posterity, with a simple notation at the top that they have since closed). This brings the total US DVD rental services down from 16 to 15.

Netflix Predicts 18% DVD Delivery Increase in 2010

Despite all the hype about digitial distribution and video on demand, Netflix predicts it will ship 18% more discs in 2010 compared to last year, showing the DVD delivery by mail model is alive and well.

Netflix Chief Financial Officer Barry McCarthy said on 25 February that while digital streaming increased 127% in 2009, it remained a relatively small part of the company's business compared to DVD delivery, which rose in “double digits” in 2009.

Happy 2010--nothing major to report this month, though we did note a press release that Netflix has reached 12 million subscribers, which is pretty impressive. We also updated our review to reflect their increase from 39 to 50 distributioin centers and the fact that over 97% of the US population, up from the previous 95%, are now within a day's mailing to one of these centers.

Bright Prospects for Netflix

Various tech analysts have written that Netflix, whose shares have slid recently given competition from Redbox DVD kiosks, remains a strong company with a bright future. As described in this Barrons piece, analysts note the lifespan of the DVD rental market will be longer than many believe. The rental-by-mail sector will be the biggest beneficiary of the drawdown in bricks and mortar stores which has been going on for several years.

One survey found that 20% of all current non-subscribers to a DVD rental service say they plan to subscribe in the next five years. To put that into perspective, that's tens of millions of new customers likely in the coming years.

Analysts downplay the threat from kiosks as well as download services, which have yet to become mainstream. Netflix itself has a download service--a free addition to regular DVD rental by mail as well--a price point which no commercial video on demand only site can match.
